FAQAbout IELTS

IELTS Academic

The Academic Reading and Writing Modules assess whether a test taker is ready to study or train in the medium of English at an undergraduate or postgraduate level. Admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses is based on the results of these Modules.

IELTS General

The General Training Reading and Writing Modules are not designed to test the full range of formal language skills required for academic purposes, but emphasise basic survival skills in a broad social and educational context. General Training is suitable for test taker who are going to English speaking countries to complete their secondary education, to undertake work experience or training programmes not at degree level, or for immigration purposes to Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Note:  It is the responsibility of the test taker to inform the test centre whether they wish to take the Academic or General Training Modules.

The Listening and Speaking modules are taken by all test takers. Topics are of general interest and it makes no difference what subjects candidates intend to study. Please note that the speaking part of the test will be recorded.

Listening, Reading and Writing Tests

The Listening, Reading, and Writing tests are administered during the morning. The total time for the three tests is 2 hours and 45 minutes plus time for paper distribution and collection.

The IELTS approach is recognised as being fair, reliable and valid to all test takers, whatever their nationality, cultural background, gender or special needs.

Speaking Interviews

Speaking interviews are usually scheduled for the afternoon of the test date. You will receive the appointment time by email on the Thursday before test day. People living outside Calgary are given priority.
