About Calgary
Calgary is western Canada's fastest growing city. Calgary hosts a world renowned summer festival called the Calgary Stampede in July. Everyone enjoys the festivities which include a rodeo, a parade, chuckwagon races, bull riding and a fair with concerts, games and rides. This is why our city's nickname is 'Cowtown'! All the cowboys and girls come out for the Stampede!
Calgary hosted the winter Olympics in 1988. Calgary continues to entice visitors to its superior ski hills and facilities. One such facility is Canada Olympic Park, which continues to host Olympic athletes all year round for training and various competitions. You can go skiing or snowboarding in the winter. In the summer they offer mountain biking trails. You can also take a gondola ride and visit the Olympic museum all year round.
While in Calgary, be sure to visit Eau Claire Market. This unique market is located close to the Bow River which runs through Calgary. You can rent rollerblades and skate along the river. You can relax in the park or go shopping at the market. You can also take in a movie or IMAX presentation; located right in the market. A great place to hang out; just a 15-minute walk from our school.
If you are interested in the history of the old west, then Heritage Park is a must see. Why not take a step back in time and explore what life was like in Western Canada from the time of the first fur traders to the early 1900's. You can ride a steam locomotive and much more. There is even an old fashioned amusement park
There is no end to sports in Calgary! The Saddledome hosts professional hockey games, concerts and the rodeo. Calgary's hockey team is the "Calgary Flames" and the football team is the "Calgary Stampeders". Come and watch some of the action!
If you love nature, a venue worth going to is the Calgary Zoo. The zoo has an excellent collection of wildlife from around the world with a section devoted to native wildlife of Canada. If you are here in the winter over the Christmas season, you can see the incredible "Festival of Lights." A dazzling array of lights throughout the zoo.
The Rocky Mountains are a prime location for skiing in the winter and sightseeing and hiking in the summer. Located just an hour away from the city, Calgarians take advantage of the beauty and outdoor activities that await them. In the mountains, you can also go horseback riding and canoeing. Small towns such as Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper are wonderful spots to visit.
